I once had lessons for touch typing. It was a very long time ago, when I was in High School. Before that point, I'd not had to type very often, so I wasn't a very good typist. I do recall, however, that I was exposed to Mavis Beacon Touch Typing in elementary or middle school. But that never really left an impression.
The main goal of learning how to touch type is to improve typing speed and accuracy. The speed part isn't terribly difficult, but the accuracy part is. It is especially difficult for me, as I tend to be too much of a perfectionist. I worry about making too many mistakes and correcting the mistakes I make. The whole experience quickly becomes tedious.
I can't imagine trying to learn DVORAK layout.

This is going to be a nerdy one.
Firefox 4: Mozilla made a big deal about how Firefox would start using the computer’s GPU to help render web pages. Well, pages do render faster, especially high-end pages. However, the downside is that the font rendering is crap.
This is with the D2D turned on:
This is without D2D turned on:
(and yes, you’d need a closer look to tell the difference).
What sucks is that the whole program is affected. It’s not just the pages that have horrible looking fonts; the actual program itself looks like crap, too.
I suppose I’ll just leave that turned off until it’s fixed.

This is a picture of a small pool. You can’t see it very well, but there are turtles swimming in that pool. This was taken at McConnell Springs Park in Lexington, KY. I watched the turtles for almost ten minutes; they seemed very happy swimming in circles. I guess it’s difficult to determine the emotional state of a turtle, but I’ll assume they were happy.

I was slightly bored this evening, so I decided to clean up my Documents folder. I got rid of a lot of stuff that was junk and I cleaned up the rest. Then I uploaded it to the cloud, so to speak. I'm still trying to decide whether I like Office Live or Google Docs. Office Live seems to be better and handling the documents, it seems.

I know where my nose is. However, my neck is hurting. I’m going to make sure I do sit-ups differently in the future.
This month is dragging on a bit longer than I would prefer. I’m looking forward to the 28th and the Fark party in Cincinnati, but I fear I may not be able to get there. We shall see.

The Sun is Shining
Cela me rend heureux.

Another issue with stream of consciousness writing is getting frequently distracted or interrupted. You're not going to be able to get very far if someone bugs you every five seconds. Though, the collection of thought snippets might be interesting, if you can collect them over an extended period of time. Well, maybe.
But now, I want to talk about color. Not colour, but color. The extra u is certainly not needed. I've always wondered why we prefer some colors over others. I'm going to answer my own question by saying that everyone has their own preferences. Well, that was pointless. Anyway, I tend to prefer blues and greens. As I stated in a previous entry, dark green is one of my favorite colors. But blues are very nice too. I love when the sky is a very deep blue. As with green, I'm not all that fond of light or pastel shades.
There's a very subtle joke in there if you look hard enough. And possibly Waldo, though I'm not quite sure about that one.

Which is something that almost everyone has heard. Odd when you think about it.
It has occurred to me that I’m not very photogenic. I’m fine with that; many people are not and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. On a completely unrelated note: I must practice my photoshop skills.
Why can’t I sleep?

It works better like that, don’t ask me why. For some reason, I’ve been rather ill tempered, as of late. I need to figure out why.
It might have to do with having a crap
internet connection router. It’s an old 802.11g, which shouldn’t be that slow, but apparently is.

On the bright side, I had a Classic Fish Sandwich from Captain D's. It was wonderfully delicious. Hopefully that will sate my cravings for fish and chips. Tomorrow, it's back to oatmeal for breakfast and pot pies for lunch. Oh. Boy. I am so excited… :-/

If I remember correctly, this was titled “Excess”. My roommate in college had a habit of going to all the local Big Lots stores looking for recently expired cereal. Specifically, he would get Kellogg’s brand cereals that had the American Airlines Sky Miles offer on them. Because they were recently expired, he was able to get them ridiculously cheap; something like $.10/box, if I remember correctly.
By the end of second semester 2004, he had almost 40 boxes of Just Right.

At least I've not written poetry about my cat.
Fortunately I've not forgotten my personal hygiene… so I've got that going for me.
Théâtre du rêve
I've never been a big fan of the saxophone. Whenever I hear A Change of Seasons, I generally refer to the sax part as "The Lethal Weapon section". I can't say that I'm all that fond of it. Otherwise, I love the song.
Temps A Relativité Dimensionnelle Inter Spatiale
Captain D's wasn't open so I decided to have breakfast for lunch. Tomorrow, it'll be back to sandwiches, but I decided to treat myself today. Breakfast is monotonous as usual with oatmeal. Though, I have been spicing it up a bit: poached eggs and cottage cheese. Oh. Boy. I am a wild one.
My backpack is very large. It's not overly huge, but it's got so many pockets and other hiding places. When I moved, I used one less box because I was able to fit so much into it. It reminds me of a clown car. Or _____ (fill in the blank with your own topical reference).

I have to say that I like the idea of OneNote. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's quite serviceable. I agree it would be very useful with a tablet PC. You know if there were others besides the iPad. It is very much like a three ring binder, except since it's digital, I can't doodle. Well, I could. But I'd be drawing with a mouse and that never looks good.
Since I have OneNote 2010 at home, I should find a way to make use of it. Sadly, unlike other Office programs, I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn’t have an online component. Correction: apparently it does. Hmm. Not terrible. A bit better than Google Docs. At least there's an intuitive way to close the document you're working on (other than closing the tab/window, that is). Also, it works in Chrome: another bonus point.
Eh. I'll do it tomorrow.
I realize it was just a joke, but the thought of someone sending pizza rolls, via mail, makes me ill. I don't want to imagine what they'd look like once they arrived at their destination. And, if they were send via Media Mail….
I can't imagine the end result would be edible.

Oh yeah, I went there.

Sometimes a little chaos is good for the soul. It freshens things up and gives you a new perspective. And sometimes it's not.
I just reread the above and my immediate response was, "Thank you, Captain Obvious." It is difficult to write something that's not crap if you have nothing to write about. I have trouble finding topics. On those rare occasions I do think of something, it's usually when I'm driving and can't jot it down. Well, I could, but I'd rather not cause any accidents.
Side note: Emeralds are nicer than geodes….
There's not really a point to that, I just wanted to say it.

Language is something we all use everyday, but it’s not something that we think about frequently. When is the last time you thought about the words you use and where they came from? The following is a short scene that has absolutely nothing to do with that:
"This makes no sense, " the editor said angrily.
"When does anything make any sense, " the author countered sardonically."
"I’m serious," the editor started, "you can't give me something like this. I certainly can't let it be published." He paused, looking for the cigarette he desperately needed, but didn't have. "It makes NO sense! These are just random words that have been vomited onto the page. There's no rhyme or reason to any of it. You are a technical writer, not an artist. This isn't some poetry slam; you're supposed to be writing a software manual."
The author smiled. "But don't you see, it does make sense. Perfect sense. Look at it again."
The editor incredulously laughed, but looked down at the page of writing.
"What am I supposed to be seeing?" the editor said.
"It's there," the author started, "just look closer."
There was an air of menace around the author now, however the editor was too engrossed with the paper to notice. As the editor stared at the page, he noticed the words rearranging themselves on the page.
"What… How… How's that happening?" the editor said.
"Keep watching, " the author said firmly, malice gleaming in his eyes.
The editor tried to respond, but his attention was forced on the page. He could not look away. As he watched, the words seemed to jump off the page and reach up towards him. He tried to pull away or scream, but he was fixed in place by some force.
The author stated laughing malevolently and the words on the page reached the editor's face. The editor's eyes went wide briefly and then he collapsed, face down, on the desk.
For a few moments, there was silence in the room. Then the editor started to stir. The author took on a more neutral expression as the editor looked up at him, slightly confused.
"I'm sorry, I must have dosed off. What were we talking about?" the editor said.
"We were discussing my latest submission," the author said evenly.
"Ah yes. Well, it's certainly up to your usual excellent standard. Doesn't look like I'll need to do much with it to get it ready for publishing. Good job."
"Thank you, " the author paused, "Thank you very much. I'm glad my work pleases you. Will there be anything else."
"No, that should be it. I'll ring you, if there's anything."
The author smiled before he turned and left. After the author had left, the editor stopped for a moment.
"Why do I feel like I've forgotten something?" he said. He paused for a few more moments before continuing on with his work.
Où est le pamplemousse?
The grapefruit is a wondrous fruit. Ok, maybe that’s an overstatement. However, it does have many health benefits. And if you can get over the bitterness of it, it can be tasty. I know many people say that Ruby Red grapefruit are sweeter, but I’m not buying it. With all varieties, there is a bitter aftertaste that turns me off. I’d much rather eat oranges.
Lemons are extremely tart, partly due to their high acid content. That’s what makes them extremely high in vitamin C. Lemons are quite delightful in Lemon Meringue pie.
One might ask why I’m writing about random citrus fruits. The answer is that I don’t know.
Limes are not as tart as lemons. Limes were used by the British navy to help stave off scurvy; this lead to the term “limeys” to develop. Key limes are tiny, found in Florida, and wonderful in Key Lime pie.
Il pleut. Nous avons besoin la pluie.
Stream of consciousness is a difficult thing to master. If it’s insane enough (looking at you, Mr. Joyce) then you’re called a genius. If it’s mundane, then you’re called pedestrian and ignored. Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying is another example. I’ve read that book; I do not like it. It’s biggest problem is that none of the characters are that interesting to me. I don’t care what happens to any of them. Vardaman’s chapter is rather... well, truncated. “My mother is a fish.” That’s it. That’s the whole chapter. The only character who was mildly interesting was Darl Bundren and he was committed, at the end. I wonder what that says about me....
I’m wearing my contacts today; they’re bothering me. I don’t know why my eyes are sensitive some days and fine on others. It often goes: sensitive, sensitive, fine, fine, sensitive. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. I put them in their case the same way every day. I squirt them with solution before submerging them. I let them soak until the solution is neutralized. This is most vexing.
Penser veut dire « to think » en anglais. Je pense veut dire « I think ». Je pense que veut dire « I think that ». Eh bien.
I recall that my mother would write “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party.” whenever she needed to test out her typewriter. The problem with using that sentence is that it doesn’t use all the letters on the keyboard. A better sentence would be “The quick fox jumped over the lazy brown dog.” This sentence uses every letter of the alphabet.
Mes yeux me font mal.

Ce me rend triste.

Monday, May 17, 2010
Elle me rend heureux.
